Colored Contact Lenses

Colored contacts are made of a very soft lens material that provides both comfortable and variety. Colored contact lenses have become increasingly popular with those interested in bringing out the natural color of their eyes or changing the color of their eyes altogether. Colored contacts are available with or without vision correction capabilities. Even those with 20/20 vision can have fun altering their eye color with colored contacts.

Colored contacts are offered as both extended wear and disposable wear types. They can be worn as daily wear lenses or for up to a week of continuous use before removal and cleaning is required.

Colored contact lens pricing varies considerably. Averages are between $25.00 to $90.00 for the more expensive designer makes and models. Often, discounts are offered if more than one pair is ordered at one time. This also enables an individual to have a few colors on hand, allowing them to change their eye color at will or to match fashions. Colored contact lenses are often considered something of a fashion accessory, with numerous colors and styles available.

Special Effects Contacts

Many designer and special effects contact lenses have become available and are becoming increasingly popular. These contacts are often grouped loosely into the 'colored contact lenses' category. These contact lenses were previously reserved for costumes, actors and performers; however, as their prices dropped, they became affordable to the average consumer. These are non prescription contacts worn for effect. Available in a variety of shapes (diamond, square, etc) and even with logos (NHL) and flags, they can have very dramatic impact.

Caution: The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently issued very strong warnings about these special effects contact lenses. Some recent studies have shown that wearing these types of contact lenses can pose very serious risks to some individuals, even causing blindness. Risks include:

  • conjunctivitis (an eye infection)

  • corneal edema (swelling of the cornea)

  • allergic reactions

  • corneal abrasion, caused by poor lens fit

  • reduction in contrast sensitivity and visual acuity

If not addressed in a timely or effective manner, these conditions and injuries can cause total blindness.

As these contacts are extremely popular with teenagers, parent are strongly advised to discuss their use with their eye care specialist prior to permitting any child to wear them.

Other consumer warnings have been issued about knock off, non prescription, discount colored lenses, often sold through bargain stores and dollar stores. Because these lenses are not categorized as a medical device, unlike prescription contacts, there are few regulations governing their manufacturing or sale. These contacts have caused very serious vision problems for some people and tearing is common. Consumers are advised NOT to purchase these lenses and be aware of the potentially serious risks they present.

Although there are these warnings about colored contact lenses and consumers are urged to be cautious, prescription colored contacts are as safe as other soft contact lenses. The important point is to wear only those colored contacts suitable to your vision requirements and acceptable to your eye care specialist.
