Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to provide vision correction to those individuals with astigmatism. In the past, toric contacts didn't exist, leaving these individuals with no choice but to wear eyeglasses to correct their vision. Today, a multitude of choices exist for those needed toric contacts, including disposable toric contacts, colored toric lenses, and even multifocal toric contacts.

About Toric Contacts

Toric contacts are manufactured just like other lenses and are available as both soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses. Toric contacts differ from others in the lens design. Toric lenses are manufactured with two different curvatures that address both astigmatism and hyperopia or myopia.

Toric contacts are manufactured to address the vision needs of those with astigmatism.

About Astigmatism

Astigmatism refers to an imperfection in the curvature of the eye. This imperfection results in blurred vision, but is easily treatable. The imperfection can rest with either the cornea or the lens, causing a different curvature in one direction than the other. For this reason, two types of astigmatism exist; corneal astigmatism and lenticular astigmatism. Unlike a normal eye, the eye surface is not smooth in every direction but instead has areas that are steeper or flatter than others.

Astigmatism is a condition that is usually present from the day your born. Most people have some degree of astigmatism, but only those whose condition causes blurred vision require toric contacts or special eyeglasses to address their vision needs.

Treatment for astigmatism includes corrective lenses, in the form of eyeglasses or toric contacts, or surgery.

Toric contacts address the limitations caused by astigmatism by making the surface of the eye consistent. Toric contacts can address both lenticular and corneal astigmatism and have become the number one choice for treating astigmatism.
